Although Wicked has been compared to The Wizard of Oz from the witches’ point of view, it is much more than that. Due to its obsessive script and intricate, interconnected plot, this uproarious program has become a worldwide sensation and a hit in its own right. The early years of two witches, Glinda and Elphaba, are thrust upon you. The former is the kind of attractive, conceited girl you might encounter in a typical high school teen drama. The latter is misinterpreted, misunderstood, and green. We learn that Glinda is the Good Witch of the South as their adventure through school and out into the fantastical world of Oz takes shape.

So are we supposed to think Elphaba is a good fit for the title of Wicked Witch of the West? The core of Wicked and its pervasive, never-ending appeal resides in this. Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman have produced a wonderfully enthralling play by defying expectations and escorting you on a beautiful journey. Wicked is a contemporary musical that has already established itself as a classic, with records, box office earnings, and accolades to its credit.
