Istanbul is one of the most populous cities in the world. The number of people living in the city is more than 15 million and more than 4 million of them are caught in traffic on a daily basis. Especially in the morning between 07.30 – 09.00, 10.30 – 12.00 and in the evening between 17.00 – 19.00 there is a traffic jam. Driving and taking taxis are not effective in congested traffic in terms of budget and time. It is important to be efficient timewise and to avoid public transportation such as buses and minibusses during rush hour as much as possible. You can use the rail systems or transportation vehicles such as boats and ferries in crowded places of the city.

Unless compulsory, Istanbul residents do not drive during rush hour. In fact, special vehicles are not used unless it is mandatory in Istanbul for a long time (There is still a lot of traffic, buddy!). Public transportation provides great convenience in the journey. Internal and external cleaning is done every day in public transportation vehicles. It is also free from viruses. This includes city line ferries. It is possible to go not only by the metro or bus but also by ferry in transfers. In addition to public transportation, stations and other waiting areas are washed and sprayed. Istanbul residents who prefer public transportation get on clean vehicles every day.

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality provides 24 hours of transportation on the weekends. Thus, you can go from one end of the city to the other, by public transport at any time of the day. Here you can browse the Istanbul transport map.

There is only one card that you will use in public transport, Istanbulkart. Apart from this, alternative payment methods such as cash and credit cards are not generally accepted.

Where Can I Buy An Istanbul Card?

There are several ways to buy an Istanbul card:

  • www.istanbulkart.istanbul website,

Kiosks don’t provide the remainder, so be careful.
