Istanbul Public Transportation Guide: Metro, Tram, and Metrobus

Istanbul is one of the most populous cities in the world. The number of people living in the city is more than 15 million and more than 4 million of them are caught in traffic on a daily basis. Especially in the morning between 07.30 – 09.00, 10.30 – 12.00 and in the evening between 17.00 – 19.00 there is a traffic jam.

Driving and taking taxis are not effective in congested traffic in terms of budget and time. It is important to be efficient timewise and to avoid public transportation in Istanbul such as buses and minibuses during rush hour as much as possible. Using the metro in Istanbul or using transportation means such as boats and ferries are generally the most effective means of Istanbul public transportation in Istanbul crowded areas.

If you are not fond of public transportation, you may want to rent a car and visit places to go in Istanbul including Istanbul attractions!

About Public Transportation in Istanbul

Unless compulsory, Istanbul residents do not drive during rush hour. In fact, special vehicles are not used unless it is mandatory in Istanbul for a long time (There is still a lot of traffic, buddy!). Istanbul public transportation provides great convenience in the journey. Internal and external cleaning is done every day in the Istanbul metro and in other public transportation vehicles. This includes city-line ferries. It is possible to go not only by metro or Istanbul bus working hours but also by ferry in transfer. In addition to public transportation, stations and other waiting areas are washed and sprayed. Istanbul residents who prefer public transportation get on clean vehicles every day. There are some mobile apps for Istanbul that you can use to save time!

Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality provides 24 hours of transportation on the weekends. Thus, you can go from one end of the city to the other, by public transport in Istanbul working hours at any time of the day.

Here you can browse the Istanbul public transportation map. (High resolution)

There is only one card that you will use in public transport in Istanbul working hours, Istanbulkart. Apart from this, alternative payment methods such as cash and credit cards are generally not accepted in Istanbul public transportation.

Where to Buy An Istanbul Card?

istanbul-card-image
There are several ways to buy an Istanbul card:

Tip: The method I would recommend is the IstanbulKart mobile application, as it includes both the English language option and is reliable and easy to use.

  • www.istanbulkart.istanbul website,
  • İstanbulkart application centers (click to see the list of centers)
  • İstanbulkart mobile application (click to install the application)
  • Istanbulkart representatives and ticket kiosks. (There are representatives and ticket shops where you can buy Istanbulkart all over the city. Click to see them.)

Price of the Istanbulkart: The price of Istanbulkart is around €1,5. However, this is the deposit price you give to the card itself. You also need to load money into the card. Of course, how much money you put on the card is entirely up to you.

You can also get your Istanbul transportation card from this link (travel agency link) and have it sent to your accommodation.

Airports

Do not think “As soon as I arrive in Istanbul, will I try to buy Istanbulkart as the first thing?” Make sure your city journeys will be much easier. In addition, Istanbulkart is very important for the journey from Istanbul Airport to the city. For this reason, you can also use a credit card in public transportation while coming to the city from airports. If you do not plan to take a taxi from the airports to the city (i.e. to pay a large amount of money to the taxi as soon as you arrive), go to Istanbulkart before going to public transport in Istanbul working hours. Airports in Istanbul have a lot to offer!

If you are more than 4 people on your way to and from the airport, you can also try airport transfers, which is a very comfortable option.

Istanbul Airport

istanbul-airport-photo
At Istanbul Airport, you need to purchase Istanbulkart after you get off the plane after took your luggage. Istanbulkart is used in Havaist buses that will take you to the city from the airport. To purchase Istanbulkart at the airport, you can go to the (-2) Floor, where you access the public transportation floor, and you can purchase Istanbulkart from 24 kiosks located in 4 different areas with direction boards.

Sabiha Gokcen Airport

istanbul-sabiha-gokcen-international-airport
There are also kiosks for Istanbulkart at Sabiha Gokcen Airport. However, credit cards may also be valid for Havaist that will take you to the city from the airport. If you have an Istanbul card, which you have used before, you can re-fill the card at kiosks at Sabiha Gokcen Airport.

Tip: I recommend you to use Havaist buses for both airports. You can also pay for these means of transportation in Istanbul by Cash, or even in Euros and USD. Click here to see the stops of Havaist buses.

Where to top up Istanbulkart?

To use Istanbul public transportation, you can find kiosks everywhere to make a prepayment to Istanbulkart. As well as a buffet on the road, a grocery store or a load point to Istanbulkart at an Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. There are more than 3600 convenience stores in various parts of Istanbul to load cash on the card. For people who have an NFC support system on their phones, there is also an Istanbulkart mobile application. You can also load your card via your phone. In this way, you can see your credit remaining on the card, see the places where you can install and use the closest, and follow all the details.

How Much are the Istanbulkart Travel Fees?

When you travel with Istanbulkart, except for arrivals from the airports, you pay the following fees according to your journey and the public transport you use. Click here to find out if these fees are up to date.

In subway, public transport in Istanbul working hours, ferry, boat, and other rail systems

Metrobus

metrobus-istanbul
In Metrobus, you pay money per stop. However, since it may not be clear how many stops you will take while taking the Metrobus, all the stops are paid for as if you were going to end the journey. For this reason, you can get your refund by getting your card closer to the money-back kiosks after getting off at the Metrobus stops.

Charges by number of stops are as follows
  • If you go 1 stop, you pay €0,30
  • 2 stops – €0,35
  • 3 stops – €0,40
  • 4-9 stops – €0,50
  • 10 – 15 stops – €0,60
  • In every subsequent 5 stops, your payment continues to increase by half the previous increase. You pay from your card while you are getting on the Metrobus Station. If the road you go contains few stops, you need to get some of your money back. Therefore, get your refund from the return kiosks located at the exit of the Metrobus stops.

Marmaray

marmaray-istanbul

Marmaray is a railway project that provides Istanbul public transportation underground, above ground, and between some stops under the sea, just like the Istanbul metro. (Unfortunately, we can’t see the fish yet when we are under the sea)

Marmaray Project is a railway project designed according to the needs with its high capacity that does not pollute the environment by using electrical energy, designed to maintain the healthy urban life of Istanbul, to offer a modern urban life and urban transportation opportunities to the citizens, to preserve the natural historical features of the city.

With Istanbulkart on Marmaray, you pay €0,4 for the shortest trip and €1 for the longest trips.

There are money-back kiosks at the Marmaray exits, just like the Metrobus stop exits. Don’t forget to get your refund!
